Getting cited by AI as a local small business in Canada

Customers ask AI for “the best near me.” Here’s what helps a local Canadian business get named, city by city.

“Who’s a good dentist in Granby?” “Where can I get my roof repaired in Saint-Hyacinthe?” “Which restaurant in Quebec City takes large groups?” All across Canada, customers are asking ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Copilot these questions. If you’re a local business, the good news is that these questions almost always contain a place, and you can work on that precisely.

Why being local is an advantage

A local question is specific: a trade, a place, sometimes a constraint. Assistants therefore look for a business that matches those three elements, and that business doesn’t need to be the biggest. It needs to be the most clear and the easiest to confirm.

1. Say exactly where you work

Don’t settle for “all across Canada.” State your main city, the cities and neighbourhoods you serve, and your service area. A sentence like “We serve Saint-Hyacinthe, Granby, Beloeil and the Montérégie” gives the AI exactly what it needs to connect you to a local question.

2. One page per service, with the city

“Residential snow removal in Longueuil” is more useful to an AI than an “Our services” page that lists ten things. Describe each service: what it is, who it’s for, where, at roughly what price or how to request a quote. But avoid copying the same page and only changing the city name: the content has to be genuinely different and useful, otherwise it helps neither customers nor AIs.

3. Keep the same information everywhere

Your name, address, phone number, hours and website should be identical on your site, your business listings, directories, social media and local media sites. Assistants cross-check their sources: an inconsistency lowers their confidence and can lead them to repeat wrong information.

4. Answer your customers’ real questions

Write down the questions people ask you on the phone or at the counter: “Do you handle emergencies?” “How long does it take?” “Do you accept insurance?” Put each answer, short and direct, on a frequently asked questions page. Assistants readily cite these answers.

5. Think bilingual

In Canada, your customers search in French or English, sometimes in Spanish or other languages. Pages in each useful language increase the chances that an AI will associate you with the question, whatever language it’s asked in.

6. Get mentioned locally

Chamber of commerce, professional associations, organizations in your region, local media: these independent sources confirm that you exist and that you’re active. They often carry more weight than what you say about yourself. Ask real, satisfied customers to leave an honest review, and never fabricate reviews.

7. Measure, month after month

Ask a few assistants the same local questions, at the same pace, and note whether you’re named. A trend over several weeks is far more reliable than a one-off test. Our ten-minute test walks you through it step by step.

What we can’t promise

No one can guarantee that an AI will name you first. But a local business that is clear, consistent and well mentioned puts every chance on its side. That’s what Citova does for small businesses across Canada, remotely, starting with a free audit with no commitment.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How can a local business show up in ChatGPT?

State your trade and service area precisely, keep your information identical everywhere, write clear service pages with the city, answer your customers’ real questions and get mentioned by reliable local sources.

Do you need a page for each city?

Only if you genuinely have something useful and different to say for each city. Copying the same page and changing the city name helps neither customers nor AIs.

Do customer reviews matter to AIs?

Yes, as one independent signal among others. Ask real, satisfied customers for real reviews, and never fabricate reviews: AIs cross-check their sources and fraud damages your credibility.

Let’s look at what AI says about you.
